Packing and preparing to move is often considered to be a stressful event, it doesn’t have to be this way.
Our 5 Steps To Packing And Preparing Move House Guide should help.
With good preparation in advance of moving day, a lot of stress and unpleasant surprises can be avoided on the day of the move.
Have a deep search through your home, at least a month before your moving date.
Clear items from everywhere – the loft, under the stairs, spare rooms, outbuildings, and the garden.
Then ask yourself, what do you really need. Are these items useful or valuable enough to have transported by your removal team? If not then dispose of what you really don’t need.
When you visit your new home, take note of the layout of the house, and think about how your large items of furniture will fit.
The estate agent should be able to provide you with the dimensions of each room, then you can work out what will fit and what there isn’t room for.
It’s a good idea to begin this task as early as possible, giving you time to sell or recycle any unwanted items. Try not to leave it too late, and be left with items that aren’t suitable for your new home.
There are three options available when it comes to moving home. You can do it yourself by hiring a van and asking friends and family to help out.
You can hire a professional removal company to take the strain and do the entire move for you. Or you can mix it up by taking the smaller items yourself. Using a man and van service for the large pieces of furniture.
Do bear in mind that on the day of the move, if you are part of a property chain you will need to vacate your property by 12pm.
Professional removal companies are used to working to these deadlines every week and know what it takes to have a property emptied and vacated in good time.
Many of your household items can go straight into boxes, without any real need to be concerned with them being in transit, such as books and clothing.
However, there will be many household items that will need to be packaged carefully in advance of the day of the move.
It is a good idea to start the packing process weeks before the day of the move when you are preparing to move house.
Little and often will ensure that you are not left panicking at the last moment and hurriedly cutting corners at the last minute.
Take extra care over any items that are breakable, wrap any breakable item that is valuable to you in bubble wrap or extra packaging, and mark the boxes as fragile.
Once you have filled a box mark the name of the room that it is destined for in your new home.
Check with your removal company if you wish to have highly valuable items moved, some items will not always fall within the removal company’s insurance policy.
If you’re moving or have just moved to a new home, make sure you contact your energy supplier.
There are some steps you should take to make sure you don’t end up paying too much for your gas and electricity. You may be charged for paying for energy you didn’t use, there is more useful information on this guide from the Citizens Advice Bureau.
